Welcome to Mrs. Lloyd's 6th Grade
"Together may we give our children the roots to grow and the wings to fly."
In ELA we read novels throughout the year. We often incorporate ELA skills into our other subjects. Our writing program includes Friendly and Business Letters, Poetry and Research based projects. In Grammar we review and expand upon skills we have used throughout our elementary grades. Spelling is also included in our ELA program with weekly assessments.
We use the Math in Focus series. The concepts covered in this series include: positive/negative numbers on the number line, multiplying and dividing fractions/decimals, ratios, rates, percents, algebraic expressions, equations/inequalities, the coordinate plane, area of a circle/polygons, surface area/volume of solids, introduction to statistics.
We use the FOSS Science program to study Variables and Diversity of Life. The Variables unit is a continuation of the 5th Grade studies and focuses on variables that could change the outcome of an experiment, graphing and applying these concepts to real life situations. Diversity of Life focuses on plant and animal life; specifically what is living and nonliving and how do we know.
In Social Studies we learn about Ancient Civilizations including Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Mesopotamia. Research projects that are incorporated into our studies are Ancient Egypt and Christmas around the World.
In 6th grade will will explore God's Word in the bible. We will also explore Egypt, Palestine and the Liturgical Year. The 6th graders will also incorporate service learning into the school year. 6th graders will also be asked to participate in major roles for the Living Stations of the Cross.
For all subjects, we follow both the Diocese of Rochester Learning Standards, as well as the New York State Learning Standards.
NYS Assessments and Progress Monitoring
St. Mary Our Mother School participates in the New York State assessments in ELA and Math, utilizes progress monitoring tools (i-Ready) throughout the school year, as well as a variety of formative and summative assessment formats that help us to support student learning and to inform instruction. Our students are encouraged to use the skills necessary for success on these assessments every day, in every subject.
When you put God first, you'll never be last.
